The most important question when choosing a phone for someone with vision loss isn’t “what features does it have?” It’s a simpler, more fundamental one: 

Was this phone designed for blind and visually impaired people — or was it adapted from something built for sighted users? 

The answer to that question determines almost everything about how reliable, how natural, and how genuinely useful the phone will be in daily life.

 
 

What “adapted” means in practice 

The most common phones on the market — iPhones, Android devices — have accessibility features built in. Apple’s VoiceOver and Android’s TalkBack both allow blind users to navigate a visual interface using gestures and audio feedback. 

These are genuine, significant achievements. For people who were already comfortable with smartphones before their sight changed, and who have the time and support to learn a complex gesture-based system, they can work well. 

But they are adaptations. The underlying interface — the screen, the icons, the apps, the menus — was designed for sighted users. Accessibility is a layer applied on top of that design, not a replacement for it. 

This matters practically in several ways. The gesture vocabulary for VoiceOver or TalkBack is extensive and takes significant time to learn. Every software update can change how things work. Apps vary widely in how well they’re optimised for screen readers — some work seamlessly, others barely at all. And the cognitive load of navigating a complex visual interface via audio is meaningfully higher than navigating something designed to be audio-first from the start.

Consider independence, not just capability. A phone that can technically do something, with enough effort and assistance, is not the same as a phone that a person can use independently and confidently. Independence is the goal. What’s the most direct route to that goal for this specific person? 

Consider the support available. Setting up and maintaining an accessible iPhone requires either technical knowledge or ongoing support. A voice-first device typically requires much less. For people who don’t have consistent technical support available, simplicity isn’t a compromise — it’s a feature.
